Kate Laing
Objectives:
1) Students will write out a 24/7 daily schedule
2) Students will identify ways to decrease time on social media
3) Students will reflect on their time management and see if they need adjustments on their social media usage
Lesson:
A) Video (Hook) – 3 min
-
Have students watch the video and begin thinking about their time on social media
B) Introduction - 5 min
-
Have them write out their 24/7 daily schedules to make them aware of how much they spend on social media and other aspects of their life
C) Time management; Source: (Dierdorff, Erich C.) - 5 min
-
Awareness: “thinking realistically about your time by understanding it is a limited resource” (Dierdorff)
-
Arrangement: “designing and organizing your goals, plans, schedules, and tasks to effectively use time” (Dierdorff)
-
Adaptation: “monitoring your use of time while performing activities, including adjusting to interruptions or changing priorities” (Dierdorff).
-
Break down adaptation, arrangement, and awareness
D) Ways to decrease time; Source: (Brevers, Damien, and Ofir Turel) - 5 min
Q: How can one decrease the use of social media?
-
No strategy: not interested in using social media or not interested in controlling your social media use
-
Prevent Access: find ways to prevent usage of social media (no internet go into the woods, hang out with family, etc.)
-
Modify a feature on the device: find control over phone (screentime, place far from you)
-
Delimit a specific time of use: a plan to stop using at a certain time (“I will not use my phone past 11 pm” (Brevers and Turel).)
-
Self-talk: reflect on goals and ask if this is helping you long term or short term
-
Straightforward self-control: say you aren’t using the phone until you finish the important things that you have to do
E) Usage of your time; Source: (Solari) - 5 mins
-
Social media affects us in many ways positive and negative
-
“In general, whether social media has an effect on well-being depends on a few factors: who is using it, how are they using it, and why are they using it” (Solari).
Q: What strategies would you use or would you use any?
Q: Where is social media ranked in the 24/7 daily schedule? (highest time?)
